The Citizens’ Table isn’t just a space to read, it’s a space for engagement and action. The ideas on this page are offered as examples of small steps to deepen reflection, spark dialogue, and experiment with conversation. Try one at your own table, at a coffee shop, or on a walk.
Swap stories, not Headlines
Invite someone whose life experience is different from yours for coffee or a walk. Instead of discussing the latest news, swap personal stories about a shared theme, like first jobs, a favorite class, food, or movie, or moments you felt proud of your community. Notice how much more complex the conversation feels than a typical current events discussion.
A Question for the Table
At a meal with family or friends, try posing a single, open-ended question for people to reflect on: “What’s one thing you’ve changed your mind about in the past year, and why?” Then listen, really listen. Share your own answer too, but let curiosity guide the conversation. Thank people for sharing, even if you disagree.
